An improved way to globally trade used automotive engines is launched

Supporting the provenance of used automotive engines is hard to do once they are out in the market, and if there is no traceability as to their use history this can adversely affect transactions and fair trade. Keeping this flow going is also a crucial part of the global business community’s reach towards sustainability. Lowering the degradation of products is another key consideration which allows effective products to continue being recycled.
BSI, the business standards company, has worked with Sun Partners Co.,Ltd and their client KAIHO SANGYO Co, Ltd to create a specification that gives assurance to potential buyers that the information provided about a used engine is in fact genuine. The use by sellers of PAS 777 Specification for the qualification and labelling of used automotive engines and any related transmission units will enable buyers to have confidence in their own judgement as to the potential life and value of used engines that they may be considering the purchase of.
For reuse to be successful, individuals or organizations should be in possession of sufficient, reliable information about the ownership, use history and current condition of the engine and any related transmission units. This will enable decisions to be made as to whether the engines are viable and have on-going functionality.
David Fatscher Head of Market Development for Sustainability at BSI said: “Being involved in a specification such as this is not just about improving economic flow. Increased reuse of items is expected to reduce the negative impact on the environment caused by overconsumption or resources and subsequent product disposal. Of course this impacts positively on the economy too, but we cannot dismiss the savings in energy consumption, materials and other production costs that will occur.”
PAS 777 sets out a process for the collation, recording and presentation of relevant engine and related transmission unit data that can be validated. The information to be provided is considered essential to a sound understanding of the potential life and performance of the engine and related transmission unit, and the methods specified for gathering and presenting that information are robust, repeatable and transparent.
What PAS 777 does:
- Focuses on the quality of the information to be provided with the engine and transmission unit
- Establishes conditions that must be fulfilled for a used engine and related transmission unit to be placed on the market
- Enables reliable demonstration of the accuracy and validity of the collated data in a manner that can be independently verified when required
- Uses a Qualification Characteristics Matrix Outcome (QCMO) to provide for some uniformity and traceability and judgement on the general condition of the engine at the time of qualification
Some of the organizations that were involved in the collaborative development of PAS 777 includes Autoparts Ijichi Co. Ltd, Japan, Aviva Insurance, UK, British Vehicle Salvage Federation, UK and CaRepo Corporation, Japan.
